[texts]Experiments on the Heusler magnetic alloys (Volume Bulletin of the Bureau of Standards, Vol. 2, 297-316 (1906) Scientific Paper 38 (S38))
Describes measurements of the magnetic properties of a series of specimens of these alloys together with measurements of the magnetostriction and of the effect of a magnetic field on the thermo-electric properties. Attempts were also made to measure the mechanical properties (Young's modulus) of the alloys, but all the specimens behaved very erratically and several broke at low loads on account of internal flaws, so that the authors are unable to say more than that Young's modulus is high...

[texts]Compton Scattering by Static and Moving Media - Psaltis, Dimitrios
Compton scattering of photons by nonrelativistic particles is thought to play an important role in forming the radiation spectrum of many astrophysical systems. Here we derive the time-dependent photon kinetic equation that describes spontaneous and induced Compton scattering, as well as absorption and emission by static and moving media, the corresponding radiative transfer equation, and their zeroth and first angular moments, both in the system frame and in the frame comoving with the medium...

[texts]Towards an Autonomic Cluster Management System (ACMS) with Reflex Autonomicity - Truszkowski, Walt
Cluster computing, whereby a large number of simple processors or nodes are combined together to apparently function as a single powerful computer, has emerged as a research area in its own right. The approach offers a relatively inexpensive means of providing a fault-tolerant environment and achieving significant computational capabilities for high-performance computing applications. However, the task of manually managing and configuring a cluster quickly becomes daunting as the cluster grows i...

[texts]Temperature coefficient of magnetic permeability within the working range (Volume Bulletin of the Bureau of Standards, Vol. 12, 1-10 (1915) Scientific Paper 245 (S245))
In magnetic measurements made at the Bureau of Standards it has been found that the heating effect of the current, employed to produce fields of 100 to 300 gauss, changes appreciably the value of the induction for a given field. The usual practice, when an accuracy of 1 % is desired, has been to immerse the coil in an oil bath maintained at a constant temperature of 25 degrees . The object of the present investigation is to determine the magnitude of the temperature effect and to see whether it ...

The crystallite size of the samples is in the range of 32–55 nm. The density and uniformity of particle size distribution rose  with the increase in cobalt concentration. [texts]Determination of magnetic induction in straight bars (Volume Bulletin of the Bureau of Standards, Vol. 6, 31-88 (1909) Scientific Paper 117 (S117))
It is found that a close approximation to uniformity of magnetic flux along a test rod can be secured by using properly constructed specimens and yokes and properly distributed magnetising coils. The double bar and yoke form of magnetic circuit seems to offer the greatest number of advantages and the fewest disadvantages. The reluctance of the yoke and joints can be kept very small. This is accomplished by having the yokes short and of moderately large cross-section, and making the surface of co...

[texts]Determination of the degree of uniformity of bars for magnetic standards (Volume Bulletin of the Bureau of Standards, Vol. 14, 1-14 (1918) Scientific Paper 295 (S295))
This paper describes a method for investigating the degree of magnetic uniformity along the length of straight bars such as are used for magnetic standards, and gives the results of tests made on a number of such bars. The bar to be tested is clamped between the poles of a suitably designed electromagnet and two small exactly similar coils slide along the bar at a fixed distance apart. These coils may be connected in opposition, and when the circuit is completed through a ballistic galvanometer ...

[texts]Doubly differential cross sections for galactic heavy-ion fragmentation - Cucinotta, Francis A.
An abrasion-ablation T-matrix formulation is applied to the calculation of double differential-cross sections in projectile fragmentation of 2.1 GeV/nucleon O-16 on Be-9 and 86 MeV/nucleon C-12 on C-12 and Ag-108. An exponential parameterization of the ablation T-matrix is used and the total width of the intermediate states is taken as a parameter. Fitted values of the total width to experimental results are used to predict the lifetime of the ablation stage and indicate a decay time on the orde...

[texts]NASA/GSFC Research Activities for the Global Ocean Carbon Cycle: A Prospectus for the 21st Century - Gregg, W. W.
There are increasing concerns that anthropogenic inputs of carbon dioxide into the Earth system have the potential for climate change. In response to these concerns, the GSFC Laboratory for Hydrospheric Processes has formed the Ocean Carbon Science Team (OCST) to contribute to greater understanding of the global ocean carbon cycle. The overall goals of the OCST are to: 1) detect changes in biological components of the ocean carbon cycle through remote sensing of biooptical properties, 2) refine ...

The surface of Mars has been subject to aeolian, fluvial, and periglacial activity in the (relatively) recent past. Consequently, techniques to quantify the ages of geological processes on Mars have become an important area of research...
